Martha & Andrew Stewart
Martha and Andrew Stewart had all the elements of a happy family: working part-time as a model while attending Barnard College. Andrew then enrolled at Yale University. Then, credits to her website, she married him in 1961, wearing a dress she’d made herself, making herself a lifestyle tycoon. Andrew Stewart, her then 26-year-old husband, was the publisher. This year marks the four-decade anniversary of their separation, being separated for longer than they’ve been married.
The two were put up on a blind date when they first met, and Martha told New York Magazine years later that the soon-to-be celebrity couple “fell in love the first date, that type of thing.” They married a year later, in July 1961. Martha and Andrew’s first apartment as newlyweds was at the 21st-floor Upper East Side penthouse. Before eventually separating in 1990, they were married for 29 years and had one child, Alexis Stewart. Martha has avoided media attention in recent decades as the couple’s infamous breakup fades from public consciousness.
